Welcome to the Office of the Contaminated Sites Committee.

The Contaminated Sites Act 2003
The Contaminated Sites Act 2003 (the Act ) provides a regulatory framework for the identification, recording, classification, management and remediation of contaminated sites.

The Contaminated Sites Committee
The Act establishes a Contaminated Sites Committee to make decisions about responsibility for remediation of contaminated sites, disclosure statements and to determine appeals against certain decisions made by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). The statutory Committee, of between three and five people, is appointed by the Minister for the Environment but is fully independent of DEC in its decision making role.

The Office of the Contaminated Sites Committee aims to manage the application and appeal processes efficiently, effectively and fairly, without legal technicality or formality.
